California kids are going without vision care, and the problem is getting worse | KPBS Public Media Blind Spots: How Broken Insurance Leaves Millions of Americans Without the Vision Care They Need From schoolchildren misdiagnosed as behavioral problems to seniors who cannot read their medication labels, the gap between what is legally required and what is actually delivered is widening – with consequences for learning, independence, and quality of life. New technology offers partial bridges across this gap, but system reform remains essential.   BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT (BLUF): America faces a compounding vision care crisis. California's Billionaire Tax Heads to Voters Amid Constitutional Questions Proposition 40 would impose a one-time 5 percent levy on the wealth of roughly 200 residents. Proponents estimate it would raise about $100 billion over five years for Medi-Cal, food assistance, and education; independent researchers at the Hoover Institution put net revenue far lower once behavioral and income-tax effects are counted. Legal analysts across the political spectrum agr...

But for tens of thousands of condo owners across the country, those predictable payments have exploded into financial nightmares—$1,200 per month, $140,000 special assessments, properties losing 22% of their value, buildings literally crumbling into the Pacific Ocean, and in the worst case, 98 deaths when Champlain Towers South collapsed at 1:22 a.m. on June 24, 2021. For the first time, the U.S. Census Bureau has broken out homeowners association fees as a distinct housing expense, revealing stark geographic inequalities and a system under unprecedented stress. The data arrive...
